‘When you start with fun, it can last a lifetime.’ This summarizes the philosophy of the Jefferson Elementary School program. A daily before-school walking program is the anchor of a comprehensive wellness program in which the school attempts to infuse healthy living into all areas of the students’ lives before, during, and after school. The Jefferson Elementary Schools believes that activity and nutrition must exist jointly. The SPARK curriculum has been implemented in all classes. Activities designed to teach students about heart health and nutrition are integrated in PE class. Power Club is offered at recess for students who may choose to walk or jog during that time. Health fairs offer students opportunity to learn about current topics that impact all areas of wellness and activity. Roadrunners, an afterschool running club, fosters running as well as nutrition and strength building. Family Get Movin’ Night is a yearly event designed for parents and children to participate in activity and hands-on wellness activities together.
